Siliguri is the strategic gateway to North Bengal, the North-Eastern states of India, and neighboring countries like Bhutan and Nepal. Located 560 km from Kolkata, it is the starting point for almost every trip to Darjeeling, Sikkim, and the Dooars region. Known for its bustling markets, tea gardens, and timber trade, Siliguri offers a vibrant metropolitan experience at the base of the mountains.

The Kolkata to Siliguri route via NH12 is the primary lifeblood of West Bengal's connectivity. After massive infrastructure upgrades, much of the route is now 4-lane highway. The journey begins with the high-speed Kalyani Expressway or NH12 towards Krishnanagar. The stretch through Nadia and Murshidabad districts is smooth but requires caution near busy town intersections. Crossing the Farakka Barrage is a major milestone, though it can experience heavy truck traffic. Malda is the midway point and a popular lunch or overnight stop. After Malda, the road enters North Bengal, passing through Raiganj and Islampur (which now features a modern bypass) before reaching the Siliguri plains. The route is well-supported by dhabas, fuel stations, and rest stops.

Peak Season
October to March
10°C to 25°C
The most pleasant time for travel. The weather is cool, skies are clear, and the chances of seeing the snow-capped Himalayan peaks from the city outskirts are highest. Perfect for jungle safaris and local market exploration.
Avoid / Monsoon
July to September
Monsoon rainfall is heavy in this region. While the landscape is lush, the highway (NH12) can face waterlogging, and the nearby mountain roads are prone to landslides. Not recommended for long-haul group trips.
